Bordeaux River Cruise: Exploring France’s Wine Heartland
“A floating hotel with fine wine, fine dining, and flawless service.”
The Garonne glittered in the late afternoon light as we stepped aboard Scenic Diamond, our home for the next seven nights. The ship felt calm and inviting – a comfortable place to begin a journey through France’s wine country.

First Impressions of Scenic Diamond on Day 1
Boarding in Bordeaux was seamless. The suite was immaculate, with floor-to-ceiling windows that slid down at the touch of a button to create a private balcony – perfect for morning coffee or an evening glass of red as the scenery drifted past.
Scenic is known for its service, and the Diamond lived up to the reputation. Our butler had an uncanny knack for appearing exactly when needed and the crew were consistently warm and professional, genuinely intent on making the journey memorable. The Scenic Diamond was to be our “home from home”.
We settled in with a welcome drink as the ship prepared for an overnight stay in Bordeaux.
Day 2: Cadillac and Return to Bordeaux
The first part of our journey took us along the Garonne to Cadillac, a fortified town in the Sauternes region. Golden vineyards rolled out in every direction, producing the delicious wines the area is famous for. I joined a tasting where the sweetness of Sauternes paired beautifully with local Roquefort.
By evening we were back in Bordeaux, the city lights reflecting off the Garonne as we dined on board.

Day 3: Bordeaux City Tour and Sailing to Blaye
The morning brought a guided walking tour of Bordeaux itself. The Place de la Bourse gleamed in the sun, while the revitalised waterfront buzzed with cafés and cyclists. Later, some guests explored the Cité du Vin wine museum, but I chose to wander the narrow streets, stopping at a market to sample canelés — caramelised pastries unique to Bordeaux.
That evening, we sailed north under the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas, bound for Blaye.
Day 4: Blaye, Fort Médoc, Bourg and Scenic Enrich
Blaye’s 17th-century citadel was a highlight. Its star-shaped ramparts designed by Vauban offered sweeping views over the Gironde estuary, while our guide filled the air with stories of sieges and soldiers. From there we sailed to Fort Médoc, the day culminated with a Scenic Enrich event at Château d’Agassac. In the candlelit concert hall, a classical quartet played a beautiful selection of classical pieces. The Chateau looks like it has been plucked straight from a French period drama and we had the opportunity to admire it from every angle with only our group attending the after hours event.

Day 5: Médoc Vineyards
The Médoc is synonymous with Cabernet Sauvignon, and here the châteaux names are legendary. Our tour included tastings at one of the local estates, where gravel paths crunched underfoot and rows of vines stretched as far as the eye could see. The wine was superb, the setting timeless.
Day 6: Bourg to Libourne and Saint-Émilion
We sailed upstream to Libourne, situated at the confluence of the rivers Isle and Dordogne. A short bus journey took us to Saint-Émilion. This UNESCO-listed town was a revelation: medieval walls, sun-drenched squares, and the astonishing underground monolithic church carved from limestone.

Day 7: Château Fleur Cardinale and Scenic Culinaire
Our final full day began with a visit to Château Fleur Cardinale, a family-run estate producing Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines. The tasting was unhurried, accompanied by stories of vintages and processes that deepened our appreciation for every sip.
Back onboard, I joined a Scenic Culinaire class. Under the chef’s guidance, I mastered a classic French onion soup, the sweet aroma of caramelising onions filling the room. Tasting our creation, paired with a glass of Merlot, was a deliciously satisfying end to the week’s adventures.
Life On Board
When we weren’t ashore, life aboard Scenic Diamond was relaxed and comfortable. The lounge was the social heart of the ship, perfect for pre-dinner drinks or listening to our cruise director. Up on the sun deck, 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside stretched to the horizon. Below deck, a small gym and salt therapy lounge offered quiet wellness escapes.
Guest Impressions
My positive experience was echoed fellow travellers; here are some guest comments about their own experience:
“The crew were magnificent and could not have done more. The cabin was more than comfortable and kept clean.”
“The food onboard was superb, as was the wine… Service was always very friendly and with a smile.”
“The bed and pillows were so comfy! I enjoyed a glass of crémant from Bordeaux as we passed beautiful villages.”
“Scenic Diamond was comfortable and with good facilities… I consider Scenic to be an excellent value.”
Final Thoughts
For me, the real pleasure lay not just in the wine or the châteaux, but in the time this cruise gave us to enjoy them. From candlelit concerts to hands-on cooking classes, from medieval towns to vineyard tastings, the week offered a rare chance to slow down and immerse myself in one of France’s most flavourful regions.
Scenic Diamond isn’t just a way to see the Bordeaux region – it’s an experience in itself. The service was exceptional, the dining elegant and creative, and the destination experiences perfectly paced.
As we left the ship in Bordeaux, I reflected on the pleasures of river cruising: a blend of discovery and ease, where every detail is taken care of and every moment feels worth lingering over.
