What to expect from the newest river ship on the Douro

If you’re dreaming of cruising through Portugal’s golden Douro Valley, there’s a stunning new ship to know about – Riviera Rose. Launched in April 2025, this elegant river cruise ship from Riviera Travel brings a new level of luxury to the Douro.

We had the pleasure of spending seven nights on Riviera Rose’s Douro Valley and Salamanca itinerary — and here’s what made this ship stand out from the moment we stepped aboard.

First Impressions: A Warm Welcome Aboard Riviera Rose

From the moment we boarded, we knew that we would be in for a treat. The impressive atrium with its vast skylight flooded the space with natural light and open views into the lounge and restaurant. It immediately set the tone for what was to come – cruising the Douro in style.

This space is the heart of the ship, where guests gathered to chat with the cruise director, arrange dinner reservations and join daily excursions.

After a long travel day, the friendly crew were ready and waiting with warm smiles. Our luggage was whisked away to our cabin while we were escorted straight to dinner – a lovely touch that instantly made us feel looked after.

Every corner of Riviera Rose oozes modern elegance. From the floral centrepiece in the dining room to the sleek lounge and bar, where cocktails and canapés flow freely before dinner, everything feels contemporary yet welcoming.

But the true showstopper? The sun deck. With one of the largest infinity pools on any Douro river ship, this space feels luxurious. Floating in the pool as the vineyards and terraced hills drift by is a real option as is sinking into the padded sun loungers that allow you to relax on a lazy afternoon.

It’s worth noting that Riviera Rose looks every bit as beautiful in person as she does in the brochure. Our first impressions confirmed it: we had chosen a stunning ship for our first Douro cruise.

Our Cabin: Comfort and Thoughtful Design

Douro ships are designed narrower than other European river cruise ships to fit through the region’s locks but that doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort.

Our standard cabin on the Diamond Deck (Deck 3) was compact but thoughtfully designed. We had ample wardrobe space, clever storage solutions and floor-to-ceiling balcony windows that opened on to the beautiful Douro views.

Each morning, we’d wake to enjoy the scenery from the comfort of our bed. One morning, we couldn’t resist ordering room service breakfast. Sipping coffee and watching the valley unfold slowly outside felt like a perfect way to start the day.

The bathroom design was another pleasant surprise. Despite the ship’s slim profile, space hadn’t been compromised. The large, backlit mirror was perfect for getting ready, and the rainfall shower felt indulgent (the kind that tempts you to linger just a little longer).

It’s these thoughtful touches that make Riviera Rose feel luxurious yet practical – a balance not every river ship gets right.

Dining Aboard Riviera Rose – A Food Lover’s Highlight

This was our third Riviera Travel river cruise and after just a few days aboard Riviera Rose, we were convinced: the food and dining experience on this ship is the best we’ve enjoyed with the line so far.

The ship offers two main dining venues. The elegant main restaurant accommodates all 116 guests comfortably, while the more intimate, bistro-style Rio Restaurant provides a relaxed alternative for lunch or dinner. This is ideal when you’re in the mood for something a little more casual.

We’re not big breakfast people, but we were impressed by the variety available each morning. Alongside the buffet of hot and continental options, there was also a small à la carte menu for freshly cooked dishes from the kitchen, featuring eggs benedict and omelettes.

Lunch was another highlight. Each day brought new options, from regional specialties to lighter bites for those who preferred something simple. Of course, you could easily turn it into a three-course affair if you fancied! The salad bar was consistently popular. We couldn’t resist the freshly baked bread and the daily cheese board and this helped to make up for the  absence of the live cooking station we loved on previous cruises.

The dining staff deserve a special mention. Friendly, efficient and ever attentive, they ensured that glasses were never empty and plates never sat for long. Their warmth added so much to the overall dining atmosphere. This is a special element of river cruising that we appreciate.

During our cruise, dinner became one of our favourite parts of the day. It was a chance to catch up with fellow passengers and share stories from our excursions over beautifully presented dishes. Menus showcased international flavours with something to suit every palate. The soups were exceptional, so good that we ordered them almost every evening!

With four courses and free-flowing wine, no one is likely to go hungry aboard Riviera Rose. Dining times were flexible, with a window of around an hour and a half, but we appreciated the freedom to dine whenever we wished rather than sticking to a fixed seating time.

The culinary journey ended on a high note with the Captain’s Farewell Dinner. This five-course event featured a thoughtful menu celebrating the tastes of Porto and Portugal. Dishes like caldo verde (a comforting kale and potato soup) and pastel de nata (the famous Portuguese custard tart) were a fitting finale to an exceptional week of dining on Riviera Rose.

Relaxed Nights and Local Experiences

If you’re wondering what the evenings are like on a Riviera Travel river cruise, the answer is simple, they are relaxed.

The entertainment aboard Riviera Rose perfectly complements the easy-going pace of river cruising. After busy days exploring beautiful ports, we loved unwinding with a glass of wine, listening to live music and chatting with fellow passengers.

The ship’s evening entertainment is intentionally low-key, creating the perfect atmosphere to socialise or simply sit back and soak it all in.

Each night offered something different: a fun quiz night, a disco, an insightful Q&A with the crew and a special performance by local fado musicians that brought the soulful sounds of Portugal onboard.

One of the most memorable evenings of our cruise, however, took place off the ship. Everyone was invited to a special event at Quinta da Pacheca, a local winery famous for its port wine.

The evening began with a fascinating demonstration of how port is made, followed by a delicious dinner paired with local wines and live music. It was a truly authentic experience and a wonderful way to connect with Portuguese culture.

Overall, we thought the evening entertainment on Riviera Rose struck the perfect balance between relaxation and enrichment.

Final Thoughts on Riviera Rose

Our Douro River cruise with Riviera Travel exceeded expectations in every way. The combination of scenic daytime cruising and excursions was a good balance, and it was as much about the journey as the destinations.

We relaxed into the laidback atmosphere very easily and appreciated the helpful dedicated crew who made our holiday effortless and enjoyable.

Being in our 40s and 50s, we were the youngest passengers onboard but enjoyed everything the ship and itinerary had to offer.

In our opinion, Riviera Travel has elevated its river cruising experience with this ship and this was clearly reflected in the food, décor and excursions.

We think this cruise is perfect for couples, looking to explore the Douro region and its wines in comfort and style.
